Taking two engagements this quarterVarun Mahajan · Co-founder & CTO, Avuvo AI

I design the machineand build it.

Twenty-three years of shipping software. Zero years of it being a straight line. I like well-made machines, old cities, and mountains that don’t care about my roadmap.

What I’m actually doing this month.

Updated when it changes, which is often. Everything below is in my hands, not on a slide.

Two teams at a time, no more. I own the roadmap and I write code — the second part is what makes the first part honest.

Eight small libraries

Zero-dependency pieces I got tired of rewriting. Nobody asked for them. I use all eight in production, which is the only review that counts.

Go · Python · stdlib only
02 / Method

A car either starts or it doesn’t.

Nobody argues with a car about whether it’s finished.

That’s the standard I hold software to, and mostly software fails it. A 911 has been the same idea for sixty years and it keeps getting better because nobody was allowed to restart from scratch. An Aston is proof that restraint and drama can share one object. A Mustang is proof you don’t need to be expensive to be honest.

So I build products the way good cars are built: one clear idea, engineered until it’s boring to operate, and shipped before it’s beautiful.

A 911 — the object the whole section argues from.

P—01
Ship, then argue
A running thing settles a debate in ten seconds that a document extends by six weeks. I have never regretted building the prototype first.
P—02
Own the whole stack of the decision
Strategy and the terminal, same person. I’ve been the CISO and the guy fixing the pipeline at 2am, sometimes in the same week.
P—03
AI where it moves a number
I’ve shipped AI to hundreds of thousands of real users, so I’m relaxed about telling you which half of your AI roadmap is theatre.
P—04
Leave before it needs a hero
Systems that need one irreplaceable person are badly designed. So are companies. I build to be unnecessary — eventually.
03 / Evidence

Five machines. Spec sheets, not adjectives.

Numbers are sourced.
Ask me about any of them.

05 / Places

Cities that were here first.

I’m drawn to places with layers — old stone, working streets, a few hundred years of people getting it wrong and fixing it. Good perspective for anyone who thinks their two-year-old product is important.

London — Rain-slick street at dusk, old brick against glass towers.
London
Where I ran a venture solo. Grey, serious, extremely good at surviving.
Barcelona — Warm stone alley, low sun, Gothic quarter.
Barcelona
Proof that a city can be an argument about how to live.
Hong Kong — Neon canyon at night, wet asphalt, dense signage.
Hong Kong
Density as an engineering achievement. My kind of chaos.
Singapore — Skyline over the bay at blue hour, glass and planted green.
Singapore
Engineered on purpose, top to bottom. The only country I know of with a roadmap.
Thailand — Early morning temple or canal, mist and gold light.
Thailand
Where I go to stop optimising things for a week.
Austria — Alpine valley, sharp peaks, clean light.
Austria
Mountains engineered by people who take mountains seriously.
A house by the lake — House on the water at first light, still surface, mountains behind.
A house by the lake
Como, eventually. Stated publicly so I actually do it.
06 / The garage

Three objects I study instead of reading product books.

I don’t own these. That has never stopped me from reading the spec sheets like scripture, or from stealing how they were made.

Porsche 911 — Three-quarter rear, wet tarmac, single hard light.
Porsche 911Since 1963
Never restart from scratch
Sixty years of the same idea, refined and never rewritten. Every rewrite I’ve seen a team attempt was a two-year apology. The 911 is the counter-argument, in metal.
Aston Martin — Long side profile in a stone courtyard at dusk.
Aston MartinRestraint
Drama, quietly delivered
It’s fast and it never shouts about it. Most software does the opposite: shouts, then loads a spinner. I want products that feel this composed.
Mustang — Front three-quarter, dusty desert road, hard sun.
MustangHonesty
Expensive is not the same as good
Blunt, cheap for what it does, and completely clear about what it is. Half my engineering decisions are just this idea wearing a suit.
